What is Copywriting?

One of the questions I get asked most when I introduce myself as a copywriter or send a pitch to a company, I’d love to work with is ‘okay, that’s great, but what is copywriting? What do you actually do?’

Well… Copywriters are like the hidden ninjas of the marketing world. You see copy all around you – from a one-liner on banner adds to product descriptions. A copywriter wrote that and, despite some thoughts to the contrary, it’s not a skill that comes naturally nor is it something that everyone can do.

Copywriters work with tight deadlines and even tighter restrictions when it comes to character count. That’s right, it’s not just about the words – it’s about everything that takes up valuable space in the allocated area given.

A good copywriter will want to get to know you and your business. If you speak to someone and they say no problem, they can write you a website in x number of days and no, they don’t need to get anything else from you, then you’re not hiring a copywriter. A content writer, maybe, at a push – though a good content writer will also want to know a little bit more about you and your brand; otherwise, you’re going to get a work of fiction and not a personalised service.

It’s a copywriter’s role to understand what it is you need from them and to provide a quality piece of work that meets the brief. This means giving each project the time and attention it needs to create solutions that work and not relying on overused gimmicks - and believe me, there are a lot of gimmicks out there!

If you’re wondering how a copywriter could help you and your business, why not take a look at my website - check out the process and see how it works, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.
